A powerful fusion of innovation & craft

Combining the finest craftsmanship with innovative engineering allows us to realize our designers’ creative vision. We strive to create heirloom pieces that will withstand the test of time. Our furniture is handmade by the finest artisans in our European workshops and factories from high quality sustainable materials.

Join the path towards a circular future

Every year 10 million tons of furniture goes into a landfill in the U.S. alone. Our ambition is to help accelerate the transition towards a circular future. The cornerstone of our efforts is our Furniture for Life program that extends your furniture's lifespan. Find out more about the specific actions we’re taking and join the movement.

Direct from the maker

Furniture direct from the maker

For three generations our family has sold furniture direct from our workshops and factories to you. The goal has never been to sell the cheapest furniture possible – but to sell the best product at a fair price. This is still how we believe we can offer the best value to our customers.

Cutting our margin instead of quality

High-end furniture typically carries a higher price tag because of the cost of premium materials. Top grade fabrics and leathers can cost ten times the amount of the cheapest options. We take a radical approach to pricing by reducing our margins on premium materials and hence adding more value to our customers.

Transparent business model

We’re transparent on what kind of materials we use and how we source them. The same applies to where our furniture is made. We’re proud of the materials we select and of every single artisan we work with. Full transparency is the only way to make sure you, as a customer, can make informed decisions.

A few words from our founder

Civil was born out of a desire to change the way people think about their furniture – from disposable or unaffordable to a loved and continuous fixture in their lives. To achieve this we had to make a better product at a better price.

Our roots go back several decades. Both my grandfathers started to make furniture in Norway in the 1950s. When I was young, I’d spend hours by my grandfathers’ sides in their workshops, watching as raw materials were meticulously crafted into beautiful pieces of furniture. These early experiences ignited my lifelong passion for good design and craftsmanship.

I truly believe the world needs less, but better furniture. Authentic furniture with the potential to one day become a heirloom piece. The kind of object that can be enjoyed through generations. This can’t be achieved through compromises on design or quality.

Seventy years ago my grandfathers sold their furniture direct from their workshops to their customers. The goal was never to sell the cheapest product possible. But to sell the best product at a fair price. I believe this is still the most effective way to make sure more people can enjoy sustainable Scandinavian designer furniture.

My Norwegian heritage has given me a deep understanding for natural resources and appreciation of wild life. Norway’s air and water quality are among the best in the world and there is a collective commitment towards a greener path. This has sparked my dedication to take firm actions towards a circular future. We still have a lot of work ahead of us. But we’re making progress every day through our five sustainability programs.

I truly believe there is a better way. A more civil way, if you will.
